Team Trail Work

The Red Peloton teams up with the SCTC & IMBA Trail Crew….Trail Class

Several members from Team Red Peloton attended an all day symposium covering techniques and methods for sustainable trail construction and maintenance. The event was hosted by the Sonoma County Trails Council and featured the International Mountain bike Association’s Trail Care Crew.

This event is a one-day Trail Building School, during which we learned sustainable trail construction and maintenance practices via a classroom session and hands-on trail work on a section of the equestrian trail below the Spring Lake Environmental Discovery Center. Of and on rain did not dampen our enthusiasm as we tackled a 30 foot section of trail that was a clay mud bog. By the time we were done, we created a new trail tread with proper drainage that will last for years. As avid users of trails in our area, this was a great opportunity to not only do some good work today but to have the knowledge and skills to help maintain and build other trails in Sonoma County which are sorely in need of help

Red Peloton Gives Back

Plumfield Quick Release Installation

Plumfield Quick Release Installation

This year as part of our community outreach program, the Red Peloton helped out a great school – Plumfield Academy in Sebastopol. Plumbfield is a special education school for  boys 1st through 12th grade.  The school has special activities tailored to the learning requirements of students with special needs. Students with special needs may include those with learning disabilities, mental health issues as well as other physical or development disabilities. One of their activities involves riding bicycles on a short gravel trail on the school campus that is an out and back of a 100 yards. They currently don’t have enough bikes for all of the kids so they have to take turns. . We noticed when we visited the school that most of the seats did not have a quick release seat post. Each time they switch bikes, the staff have to adjust the seat height with wrenches.

So the Red Peloton stepped up and bought the school quick releases for all of their bikes and installed them. In addition, we found that there were not enough helmets for each kid forcing kids to share helmets. Through the generosity of Memorial Hospital Trauma Services Dept. we were able to obtain the helmets for the school so each kid would have their own helmet. Team representatives, Keith Flood and Jonathan Lee, rode their bikes loaded with 10 helmets and the quick release parts from Santa Rosa to the school for delivery and installation.
